Previous FBI director James the former director has pleaded not guilty to making false statements to congressional representatives and impeding a congressional proceeding.
Mr Comey's lawyer entered the plea acting as his counsel in a federal court in Alexandria, Virginia on mid-week.
The defense lawyer announced he would attempt to have the case dismissed for several reasons including that his the accused, a detractor of former President Trump, was being singled out.
The former director was charged shortly after Donald Trump urged his top legal official to take action against him.
Judicial Process
At the proceedings on Wednesday, his attorney Mr Fitzgerald told the court they planned to submit multiple legal requests to dismiss the proceedings before a trial, arguing the prosecution was retaliatory and that a US attorney was wrongfully appointed to handle the legal matter.
The former director's legal matter was first overseen by the original attorney, who left his position under influence from the former president after his examination into a different rival - the New York official - was unable to initiate prosecution.
Judicial Environment
The former director came across in good spirits as he walked into the court on mid-week, conversing with his attorneys and being lighthearted. He was accompanied by his spouse, Mrs Failor and daughter Maureen Comey, a government attorney who the previous administration recently fired.
Following the reading to the judge read his legal protections and the pair of allegations against him in the courtroom on Wednesday, the defendant was asked if he understood the accusations.
"Yes your honour. Appreciate it," he told the proceedings.
Previous Events
James Comey was the FBI Director from 2013 to 2017 and was dismissed about a few months into Trump's first administration as president. At the period, Mr Comey was directing an examination into foreign election meddling and whether there were any relationships between Russia and Trump's campaign.
While in office, James Comey caused a counter-response from liberal politicians when he stated just shortly prior to the national vote that he was examining presidential nominee Clinton's use of a non-governmental email account. Charges against Clinton were not filed, leading to disapproval from Republicans as well.
Ongoing Accusations
The federal government claim James Comey provided false information to US lawmakers during a legislative proceeding in 2020 when he was being interrogated about both the previous examination as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They allege he misled the upper house by claiming he had not authorized an individual at the agency to release to news outlets data about the government examinations.
Legal representatives also charge the defendant of "improperly attempting to affect, obstruct and slow" the legislative group by making false statements to it.
